Is “Organizing _____” always on your to-do list?
Have you had “organize the garage” on your list of things to do since last September? Or have you wanted to tackle that overflowing linen closet for ages but get can’t seem to get around to it?
I hear this constantly! You are not alone.
If you are ready to stop these nagging feelings and actually make progress, read on for a few of my ideas on what is really going on.
You want to organize the whole garage or your whole closet in one session. That might be doable for some people, depending on their situation. But if you have a garage packed full of stuff, it’s going to take a lot of time and energy to get it back into a usable, functional space. At first, think small. Can you work on this section of the garage? Or just go through your shirts? I offer 90-minute decluttering and organizing sessions for a reason. In my experience working with others, 90 minutes is a great length of time to get a lot accomplished but not be completely drained and overwhelmed after. It’s also much more doable to carve out 90 minutes than an entire weekend of uninterrupted time.
It’s hard to start something that you think is going to be hard. While I believe organizing is a skill that can be learned and anyone can get better at, it doesn’t mean it isn’t hard for a lot of people. I highly recommend hiring a professional (me or another professional) to help you get started. Just having an expert there will inject you with energy and momentum to jump start your project.
It’s hard to find the time and energy to do something extra on top of all of the other things your’re doing. You’re life is likely full and when you’re living in a disorganized, cluttered space, everything is harder and takes longer. While I do believe there are a lot of opportunities to spend less time and energy on your regular household tasks (come to one of my workshops or book a call with me if you want to learn more!) I do think it’s smart to do the decluttering and organizing work first. This again is where hiring a professional can really help to get you going.
You have too much stuff. It is overwhelming and ultimately a losing battle to organize your clutter. Going through your physical possessions and getting rid of what you don’t actually need/want is not an optional step. It is so much easier to intially organize and to keep things organized when you are dealing with less.
You think “being organized” looks a certain way. The truth is, not all organized spaces are Pinterest worthy. My definition of organized is: everything has a home and that home is known. Having an functional, organized space is easier to achieve if we aren’t so worried about the aesthetics. Or maybe, you’re already organized and you don’t know it.
I absolutely believe that an organized, functional space makes everything in your life easier. Outer order contributes to inner calm (Gretchen Rubin). If you’re ready to get organized and stay organized I’d love to help! Book a 90-minute decluttering session with me. Or, have a bigger project you want help with? Contact me for more info.
